No, there is often a significant difference between the weather in the towns (such as Pau, Tarbes or Lannemezan) and the conditions at our mountain peaks. Altitude creates microclimates specific to each mountain range, with temperatures dropping on average by 0.6°C every 100 meters.
N’PY expert insight: don’t rely only on sunny forecasts in the lowlands! It is very common to experience a “sea of clouds”: while valleys are grey and humid, once you go above 1500m, you often find clear blue skies.
For maximum reliability, we recommend comparing forecasts from Météo-France with Météociel.
At N’PY, we combine these sources with data from our local weather stations to provide accurate, resort-by-resort forecasts across the Pyrenees.
N’PY tip: when planning a mountain trip, always check the freezing level (0°C altitude). It determines whether precipitation will fall as rain or snow.
For each N’PY resort, we specifically highlight beginner areas. In our resort opening status, check the slope colors (green and blue) and the status of conveyor belts and beginner lifts.
In Gourette, for example, the Bezou area is a priority opening zone, ideal for families and beginners looking to learn skiing safely.
The Foehn effect is a warm, dry wind coming from Spain (south) that crosses the mountain ridge.
It can raise temperatures by up to 10°C in just a few hours, leading to rapid snowmelt and sometimes resort closures due to strong gusts.
The best way is to check the live webcams available on the N’PY website.
They are installed at both the base and summit areas of each resort (La Pierre Saint Martin, Luz Ardiden, Peyragudes, etc.) to give you a real-time view before you travel.
